Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
