Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
