He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and rising, and presently research predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have dared – truly, no former commander would have conceived – solo demolishing major areas of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader try to upend the old idea of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are non-believers or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably not the story of a mighty king arising; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid secret police. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to present the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you should give them your pullover too.
The evident and direct fact that the Savior from scripture requests a form of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but due to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the determined opposition to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in large quantities during minor elections.
